You may have seen reports about the ongoing meningitis outtbreak in the Canterbury area. Whjile this outbreak is not local to Derby, we want to help our community stay aware of symptoms, understand what to do and know how to protect themselves.
What’s happening in Canterbury?
NHS Kent & Medway and the UKHSA are responding to confirmed cases with antibiotic clinics and a targetted vaccination programme for affected students and close contacts.
Know the Symptoms
Symptoms of meningitis or septicaemia can include:
– A rash that doesn’t fade under a glass
– High fever
– Severe / worsening headache
– Stiff neck
– Vomitting or diarrhoea
– Joint or muscle pain
– Sensitivity to bright lights
– Very cold hands and feet
– Seizures, confusion or extreme sleepiness
If you are unsure, seek medical advice urgently.
What to do if you’re worried
If symptoms develop, call 999 or go straight to A&E. If unsure, contact NHS 111 for advice.
