Maternity care is provided at the Becket Children’s Centre on Stockbrook Street, Derby. If you would like preconceptual counselling advice, please see one of the doctors.
All the doctors will give contraceptive advice. Some of our practice nurses have been trained in family planning and would be happy to discuss your contraceptive needs with you. If you decide on a coil, this will need a special appointment with the doctor.
If you have had sex without the protection of contraception and you want to prevent pregnancy, it is important that you see a doctor as soon as possible for after-sex contraception. The emergency pill can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex and, if appropriate, an emergency coil can be fitted up to five days after unprotected sex. This service is also provided by some local pharmacists.
The practice nurses will take blood tests for those patients who are unable to get to hospital. Other centres are the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, Walk-in Centre and the Coleman Health Centre. Please ask the reception staff for further details.
Childhood immunisation clinics are held at the surgery. Full childhood immunisation is extremely important. We suggest you discuss this with your health visitor soon after the birth of your child. At the first immunisation appointment a routine medical check will be made.
Each autumn we run 'flu vaccination clinics for those people for whom it is recommended. The recommendations change from year to year but, in general, if you are aged over 65 or if you have heart disease, chest problems (including asthma), kidney problems, diabetes or other long term physical illness, we would recommend a vaccination against 'flu. Please check with a doctor, nurse or receptionist each August/September to find out if you should be immunised.
Routine cervical smears are done by the doctor or the practice nurse. To book a cervical smear, please ring reception, stating that this is what you want so that everything can be made ready before you arrive.
Heart disease is the commonest cause of premature death. All the doctors and nurses will be happy to offer advice on what you need to do to reduce your risk.
There are treatment rooms at Macklin Street for dressings, removal of stitches and minor operations.
The practice runs separate clinics for diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, chronic bronchitis and also teenage health. We believe that attendance at these clinics ensures that patients with these problems receive the highest possible standard of care. We hope to ensure that appointments are available at times convenient to patients.
